Situated amidst majestic trees in the tranquil countryside on the County Meath and Cavan border, Ross Castle commands magnificent views of Lough Sheelin, a 4500 acre lake famous for it's brown trout and liberally stocked perch and large pike.
The secluded setting and spacious, comfortable accommodation offers the visitor an exclusive retreat. Guests will find it the perfect place to relax and unwind, away from the stresses and strains of modern life, or as a venue for a private function. Only six bedrooms, all spacious and en-suite, are made available to guests. This ensures a degree of privacy and space befitting the castle accommodation experience.
All rooms are furnished in period antiques to complement the stately ambience.
The castle of Ross is located truly in the heart of Ireland, with an hour and a half drive of Dublin; the same distance from the Atlantic Ocean at Sligo or the Irish See. It is less than an hour's drive from Northern Ireland or the preeminent Irish heritage sites of Newgrange, Trim, the Hill of Tara or the River Shannon.
There are plenty of things to keep the visitor for three or four engaging days touring in the area, enjoying many popular and preeminent sites in Ireland.
The castle premises are entered through the original archway dating back to 1536 to an inner courtyard and lawn, surrounded by a stone wall and ancient trees.
On the ground floor guests will enter the large entrance hall connecting the tower and sitting room. The latter large room, with a lovely open fireplace, has wide French Windows, giving a view across the lake. This was the original castle bawn.
The ground floor to the right of the entrance hall is where the Great Hall used to be. It contains a spacious sitting-room come dining-room with fireplace. Our own turf is used to light this every evening for guests to enjoy. This room is used for breakfast, dinner and sitting together in a cosy and chatty atmosphere by an Irish turf and wood fire.
The Master Bedroom, with a double and a single bed and it's own bathroom, has private access to the terrace. Two further bedrooms share a bathroom complementing this wing of the castle. The latter are the most quiet and remote rooms in the building.
The ancient tower offers two double, en- suite bedrooms. The higher of these rooms, the Upper Tower Bedroom, can be reached up a 65 step stairway. It has spectacular views of Lough Sheelin. The room itself is extensive, featuring an antique half tester bed. The second bedroom is 40 steps up, the Lower Tower Bedroom. It offers a four poster bed, the original domed ceiling and also beautiful views of the surroundings. As you come into the tower, you ascend through a hall and up a spiral staircase into a spacious sitting room with fireplace. The accommodation is furnished throughout with antiques of excellent taste.
